Lost in Translation

Lost In Translation, 2018

Sound Installation; self contained box made of recycled pallets, Raspberry Pi with microphone.

Dimensions: 8ft h x 4ft w x 4ft d

Lost in Translation, is self-contained sound installation work that explores the transmission of image in space. Employing Slow Scan Televison to encode an image into an audible translation, the sound is played at the bottom of the container and picked up by the microphone at the top; decoded back in real-tine on the screen.

Exploring the acoustic space, the intention was to invite the audience to stand between the speaker and microphone. Using their body to disrupt the propogating sound,  it would ultimately interfere with the decoding of the original image and show their unqiue affect on the image. This aleatoric mode of image-making directly addresses the viewer, not simply as observer, but as maker.
